The Streaming Price Wars Have Begun

Photo-Illustration: Vulture and AMC Worried about how to beat the increasingly high cost of streaming? Good news: Even as Netflix recently upped its monthly fee — and Disney+ is about to do the same — a price war has broken out among several of the newer platforms. As they battle to get cost-conscious consumers to notice them, baby streamers have been serving up some particularly attractive deals in recent weeks. The savings can be substantial — particularly if you’re willing to make a long-term commitment. ➽ Ahead of next month’s transformation of CBS All Access into Paramount+, owner ViacomCBS is letting consumers sign up for a year of the platform for a whopping 50 percent off the usual price tag. Committing to an annual plan currently costs as little as $30 (or $2.50 per month) for the ad-supported version of the streamer. Cuomo Announces NYC Movie Theaters Can Reopen at 25 Percent Capacity on March 5

Hey, old friend, whaddaya say, old friend? Photo: Bloomberg/Bloomberg via Getty Images Today, New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced that, beginning on March 5, movie theaters in New York City will be allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity with no more than 50 audience members seated per screening. Safety measures, including masks, assigned seating, enhanced air filtration, and social-distancing rules, will be implemented. This announcement will bring the city in line with the rest of the state, where counties with infection rates under 2 percent were allowed to reopen theaters in October. Movie theaters in New York City closed their doors to reduce the indoor spread of coronavirus in March 2020, meaning the March 5 reopening date will mark nearly one year since theaters were shuttered. In the months since the pandemic caused movie theaters across the country to close or limit attendance, many studios and distributors shifted their distribution methods for the first … [Read more...] about Cuomo Announces NYC Movie Theaters Can Reopen at 25 Percent Capacity on March 5

The Jamaican genre’s digital rhythms are calibrated to inspire female bodies to wine , as the vigorous gyration of the waist is known across the Caribbean, and the lyrics to gyal tunes like Tony Matterhorn’s “Dutty Wine” and Mr. Vegas’s “Bruk It Down” echo this connection, calling out ladies-only instructions. The living embodiment of this culture, as seen through the years in music videos from Chaka Demus & Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote” to Rihanna’s “Work,” are the so-called dancehall queens: acrobatic dancers in go-go boots, fishnets, and “batty rider” shorts who run the floor at Kingston street parties and diaspora nightclubs with splits, head-top plants, and other feats of flexibility. Yet dancehall, the music genre, has long minimized female voices, relegating women artists to a peripheral role. This, finally, is … [Read more...] about Women Are Keeping Dancehall Fresh
