And Now, TikTok’s #JunebugChallenge Comes to Break Arms
Attention to those with bad knees: If the #BussItChallenge proved too hard on your joints, there’s already a new viral TikTok dance challenge perfectly suited to you. Named after the challenge’s creator, Junebug, the goal of the “Junebug challenge” is to keep it moving — arms, back, hands — and do it wherever you can, including but not limited to on roofs, on top of cars, and in the middle of fields, all to the track “Beat Box,” by Floridian trap rapper SpotemGottem. The dance moves in question are a more kinetic if not spastic version of the “Shmoney Dance,” which originated in 2014 with Rowdy Rebel and Bobby Shmurda. Below, we rounded up some of the best takes on the Junebug challeng so far from folks like rapper Saweetie, the Browns, and Lebron James. Now, “run and get started” on making your own version, but try not to cause bodily harm. … [Read more...] about And Now, TikTok’s #JunebugChallenge Comes to Break Arms
So You Want to Be a Working Screenwriter …
Before the strike started, I was writing an adaptation of a book called The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break. The Minotaur is a short-order cook in a steakhouse in Wichita, Kansas, and he’s a shell of the monster he used to be. I adapted it with the blessing of the author and I was ready to send it out. But when I got to L.A. and saw the strike brewing, I decided to hold on to it because I didn’t want to waste its chance. That script stayed in the drawer for two years until Variety downsized. It was a blow to me at the time to lose that job, but I felt fortunate that I had that script. It got a lot of notice and it got me work on a different level than I had had before. I changed genre: I stopped being the moody Texas art-film writer and started being the guy who could meld fantasy into reality. … [Read more...] about So You Want to Be a Working Screenwriter …
Laura Benanti’s Melania Trump Has Her Disney Princess Moment in Times Square
After Melania Trump gave her final hostage video address on Monday, A Late Show With Stephen Colbert was already ready with its own farewell message from its own Melania, Laura Benanti. What begins as a buttoned-up video address about leaving the White House (“all good things must come to an end, but also, this”) soon twirls out of control into a full-blown Times Square musical number about Melania ditching her loser husband and returning to New York City, sung to the tune of Beauty and the Beast’s “Belle,” a.k.a. “the one with the villager who desperately needs six eggs.” See, Melania loves New York, but the city does not love her back. She asks, “What is this word, complicity?” She croons about the “one lousy coup.” There is a full-on dance break on the TKTS steps. By the end of the number, with all of New York telling her they don’t want her there, Melania settles on leaving for the only place more cursed than … [Read more...] about Laura Benanti’s Melania Trump Has Her Disney Princess Moment in Times Square
Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ Floors It to a No. 1 Debut
“Drivers License,” the massive debut single by Olivia Rodrigo, debuted at No. 1 on the new Billboard Hot 100, just like all the road signs pointed toward. It speeds to the top spot with 76.1 million American streams, 38,000 downloads, and 8.1 million radio impressions, according to Billboard, the best first-week streaming showing for a “proper” debut single by a woman. Rodrigo first cracked the Hot 100 with “Want” from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the Disney+ show she stars in, which Billboard didn’t count as a properly promoted single. (The song peaked at 90.) “Drivers License” rode a wave of drama from Rodrigo’s rumored breakup with fellow HSMTMTS star Joshua Bassett, who fans allege left her for co-star Sabrina Carpenter. (Bassett released his own single, “Lie Lie Lie,” on January 14; it’ll impact the charts next week.) That led the song to break a number of records before its No. 1 debut, … [Read more...] about Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ Floors It to a No. 1 Debut
