Robin Williams Literally Changed the Way Sitcoms Are Shot and Other Things We Learned in HBO’s New Documentary
Photo: HBO Robin Williams has been gone for four years now , bringing to an end not just a spectacular life but a remarkable career as an electric comic performer, sitcom star, and Oscar-winning actor. Tonight, HBO premieres Marina Zenovich’s thoughtful and poignant documentary Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind . It culls tons of archival footage of Williams on stage, behind the scenes, and reflecting on his life in interview footage, along with anecdotes and interviews from family members, close friends, and collaborators still trying to understand the man who, delightful as he seemed, was not an easy man to understand, not to mention vulnerable, tireless, and sympathetic to a fault. Who’s Really Winning This Year’s ‘Oddscars’?
Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman in Mank . Photo: Courtesy of Netflix The 93rd Academy Awards, after an unprecedented 14-month eligibility season and a pandemic that shut most of the nation’s movie theaters, will finally be handed out on Sunday, April 25. Exactly how normal this ceremony will feel — and how normal the industry should view it as being — is up for debate: Some see it as the firm-handed continuation of a tradition that began with Douglas Fairbanks handing Clara Bow the Best Picture statuette for 1927’s Wings and has endured without interruption through all manner of national calamity ever since, and others as the weary end point of a year like no other. But beneath both positions — this is the year the show must go on and this is the year the show didn’t go on — lurks a degree of dread about this year’s “Oddscars” — the fear that they aren’t so anomalous after all. Surely, at some point, things will be the way they used to be again, right? Doesn’t that have … [Read more...] about Who’s Really Winning This Year’s ‘Oddscars’?
Is Always Better When John Mulaney Writes It
John Mulaney has been putting up #tbt pics of his SNL years all week, and he has barely aged. And although his face has remained that of an ageless lifesize doll, Mulaney has grown a lot as a performer. When he did “ I Love It ” on Update back in his writer days, he was so nervous. You could see the sweat beading on him. But this past weekend, my little baby wasn’t scared to host. He was having the time of his life. Mulaney got to bring back sketches that got killed during his tenure at Studio 8H, and he added his dark je ne sais quois to the rest. This episode felt, for lack of a better word, rigorous. Every line felt like it fought its way onto the script through a pile of dead jokes. This show was a reminder that SNL can be great when a true nutbar genius like Mulaney is at the helm. Cold Open Disgraced Trump “lawyer” Michael Cohen (Ben Stiller) is given a lie detector test by Robert Mueller (Robert De Niro). This was a loooong set up for a Meet the … [Read more...] about Is Always Better When John Mulaney Writes It
