There are three types of people in this internet world: the apologized to, the apologizers, and those who are so constantly doing both that they are sewn into the middle of this tedious Human Centipede of public shame. Makeup influencer James Charles has stitched himself snugly into this third category, having been on both ends of the YouTuber apology cycle this summer. Today Charles issued his latest apology, this time for subtweeting Alicia Keys. On August 5, e.l.f. Beauty announced that the Grammy-winning recording artist would be launching a “lifestyle beauty brand” of “skin-loving, dermatologist-developed, cruelty-free products” sometime in 2021. Charles then tweeted (and has since deleted) that “people who do not wear makeup should not be coming out with makeup brands but that’s just my opinion” and “people assumed I was shading my own friends or people I love which is not the case lol.” The next day, after having been called … [Read more...] about Here’s Who James Charles Is Apologizing to Today: Alicia Keys
The second is the continued polarization of movie budgets. It’s been happening for so long now it feels hack to point out, but generally two types of movies get made nowadays: big, expensive movies where they hope a $300 million budget will gross $1 billion, or super-small indies. Comedies that are not Jumanji fall between that gap. That gap has also become Netflix’s sweet spot, right? Lawrence is currently experiencing an America’s Sweetheart status that seems to predate these cynical, media-savvy times. (Though Julia Roberts, a former holder of the title who is knowledgeable of what expectations it holds, took pains last week to distance Lawrence from the “America’s Sweetheart” curse, saying simply that the young actress was “too cool” for it.) With every stop on the Catching Fire press tour, she has wormed her way even deeper into the nation’s collective heart. Did you see her fumbling with and subsequently spilling breath mints in Madrid, resulting in a double-take that would make Buster Keaton envious? Or zetzing Jon Stewart because he hadn’t done any research for their interview? Surely you heard her discuss soiling herself with David Letterman? There’s a straightforwardness about her that seems lacking in almost every other star of her generation, or those adjacent. Can she really be this good? Are we … [Read more...] about Is Jennifer Lawrence Katniss-ing Us?
At the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, friends and frequent collaborators Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell sat down for an hourlong chat as part of the festival’s Director Series. The longtime pals, who’ve made American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, and Joy together, talked about their singular creative relationship, including how they first met, what Russell finds so captivating about Lawrence as an actor, behind the scenes stories, the time he made her cry by spoiling the end of Anna Karenina — and the fact that he’s writing a new project for her right now (though he gave no information). Below are the best parts of the conversation. … [Read more...] about David O. Russell Made Jennifer Lawrence Cry by Spoiling
