The Song of Summer Is Dead

Photo-Illustration: Kelly Chiello and Photos by Getty Images We tried something different in our search for this year’s Song of Summer. From June through August, we rounded up the biggest smashes of each month, declared a winner and four runners-up, and also highlighted five songs to watch over the next month. Our criteria: general ubiquity ( Billboard charting, video views, airplay), quality, and seasonal appropriateness. Desiigner’s “Panda” won June ; Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s “This Is What You Came For” won July ; and Sia and Sean Paul’s “Cheap Thrills” won August . Today, the competition concludes with a roundtable discussion about the three-month ride and how the Song of Summer has evolved. CONTENDERS Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna, “This Is What You Came For” Drake ft. Kyla and Wizkid, “One Dance” Desiigner, “Panda” Fifth Harmony, “Work From Home” Sia ft. And the 2015 Song of Summer Goes to …

Photo: Kelly Chiello and Photos by Getty Images Well, would you look at that: It’s August . Summer is coming to an end. Usually by this time we have a clear Song of Summer winner, even if it’s horrible, as was the case last year with “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea . But this year, things are different. There are a dozen contenders in the ring, and none of them have elbowed out the competition. If we’re being honest with ourselves and each other, there’s only one conclusion to reach: In the year 2015, there is no true Song of Summer. This isn’t a bad thing! Music streaming has upended the traditional label machinery that historically made the Song of Summer race so definitive. In so doing, it has helped to level the playing field. Make no mistake, the cream still rises to the top, and there are a handful of tracks we’ll remember when we think back on this summer. It’s just that no one of them rises above the rest. They’re all winners. Enjoy them — and may Kanye’s “ … [Read more...] about And the 2015 Song of Summer Goes to …

Pink Picks the 5 Best Songs She’s Ever Written

Pink. Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Pink has to thumb through a Wikipedia page on her phone detailing her album credits to remember all the songs she’s written. After 17 years and seven albums — each of which she’s written or co-written nearly every song — it’s hard for her to keep track. “Oh fuck!” she exclaims, recalling writing one. “Nope, not that,” she says, wanting to forget another. “This is gonna take awhile. What have I done?” she exhales the longer the list keeps going. When Pink was a teenager growing up outside Philly, she would journal lyrics as a means to cope with her parents’ divorce; they’re what eventually led to L.A. Reid signing her to LaFace Records before she even turned 18. At 38, she’s still writing to process the traumas of both her interior life as well as the state of the world, but she often dulls the pain by writing songs that make room for escapism, hoping people will join her in getting out of their heads for however long they need. It’s why … [Read more...] about Pink Picks the 5 Best Songs She’s Ever Written

’s ‘Wuhan Flu’ Song Made the Oscars Shortlist

Photo: Courtesy of Amazon Studios The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its shortlists for nine categories in the upcoming 93rd Annual Academy Awards. There are many great, deserving, and expected titles on the lists: Boys State and Dick Johnson Is Dead for Documentary Feature, Another Round and La Llorona in International Feature Film, Tenet in Visual Effects. There are also some surprises: Mank in Visual Effects (don’t you remember the part where the not-exactly-whizz-bang Mank Mank finds all the infinity stones and animorphs into Thanos?) and Hillbilly Elegy for the Makeup and Hairstyling that went into creating the living dybbuk that is Mamaw. Most intriguing though is the Original Song category, in which fifteen songs have advanced to the shortlist. These include “Husavik” from Eurovision Song Contest, and the “Wuhan Flu” song that Sacha Baron Cohen sings in disguise at a far-right rally in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. … [Read more...] about ’s ‘Wuhan Flu’ Song Made the Oscars Shortlist
