Photo: Columbia/TriStar, MGM, FilmDistrict, A24 Films and Universal Studios It seems like a good bet that the car movie will always be with us: This year has already given us The Fate of the Furious and Baby Driver , and we still haven’t entirely recovered from Mad Max: Fury Road. Of course, a “car movie” can mean many things — from a racing flick to a road movie to, well, a film that’s just set among cars in general. Regardless, we thought this might be a good time to take a step back and look at some of the best car movies over the years, and to do so in an all-encompassing, inclusive way. As a result, this list of movies is quite eclectic — it includes gearhead classics, cult standbys, noirs, modern blockbusters, art-house favorites, and even some genuine obscurities. Along the way, it became clear to us that a “car movie,” more than anything, is a film where a car plays a key role in the way a character interacts with the world — be it as a weapon, a tool, a … [Read more...] about The 33 Greatest Car Movies Ever

Robin Williams Literally Changed the Way Sitcoms Are Shot and Other Things We Learned in HBO’s New Documentary
Photo: HBO Robin Williams has been gone for four years now , bringing to an end not just a spectacular life but a remarkable career as an electric comic performer, sitcom star, and Oscar-winning actor. Tonight, HBO premieres Marina Zenovich’s thoughtful and poignant documentary Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind . It culls tons of archival footage of Williams on stage, behind the scenes, and reflecting on his life in interview footage, along with anecdotes and interviews from family members, close friends, and collaborators still trying to understand the man who, delightful as he seemed, was not an easy man to understand, not to mention vulnerable, tireless, and sympathetic to a fault. The documentary covers Williams’s early life and his career, from his stand-up days in San Francisco in the 1970s through his commercial breakthrough with Mork & Mindy, his dramatic film career, all the way through to his addiction issues, illness, and the circumstances of his death … [Read more...] about Robin Williams Literally Changed the Way Sitcoms Are Shot and Other Things We Learned in HBO’s New Documentary
Who’s Really Winning This Year’s ‘Oddscars’?
Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman in Mank . Photo: Courtesy of Netflix The 93rd Academy Awards, after an unprecedented 14-month eligibility season and a pandemic that shut most of the nation’s movie theaters, will finally be handed out on Sunday, April 25. Exactly how normal this ceremony will feel — and how normal the industry should view it as being — is up for debate: Some see it as the firm-handed continuation of a tradition that began with Douglas Fairbanks handing Clara Bow the Best Picture statuette for 1927’s Wings and has endured without interruption through all manner of national calamity ever since, and others as the weary end point of a year like no other. But beneath both positions — this is the year the show must go on and this is the year the show didn’t go on — lurks a degree of dread about this year’s “Oddscars” — the fear that they aren’t so anomalous after all. Surely, at some point, things will be the way they used to be again, right? Doesn’t that have … [Read more...] about Who’s Really Winning This Year’s ‘Oddscars’?
Wait, What Are Taylor Swift’s
Fearless Taylor’s Version has all the emotional highs and lows we’ve come to expect from Taylor Swift albums, only longer and now with 100% more Joe Jonas! Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images The first of Taylor Swift’s re-records is finally here, meaning the small window of peace between now and when she surprises us with the next one begins now. She’s kicked off her grand scheme to regain control of the masters to her first six albums from music exec Scooter Braun with her 2008 sophomore album — her first to win the Grammy for Album of the Year (but definitely not her last ). I was 17 when Fearless came out the first time, about the same age as Taylor when she released it then; listening to it now as a fresh 30-year-old ( and Swift now 31 ) feels like a homecoming. You could not pay me to relive that age … but you can definitely give me Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and let me visit it for an hour and 46 minutes. This is a hefty album. At 26 tracks — 13x2, for … [Read more...] about Wait, What Are Taylor Swift’s
Baby Just Say Yes … to These Easter Eggs Off Taylor Swift’s
Photo: Taylor Swift For the project of rerecording her first six albums to regain ownership of her masters, Taylor Swift started with a monster: Fearless . The album refined the country-pop style Swift was known for in her early years and includes multiple of her signature songs, including “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me”; it went on to win the triple crown of country music (Album of the Year at the CMAs and ACMs and Best Country Album at the Grammys) along with nabbing Swift her first of now three Album of the Year Grammys . Swift had released bonus tracks and other one-off songs written at the same time, but when she announced the rerecording, she shared that there were even more songs from the era fans had never heard. So Swift cracked open the vault for Fearless (Taylor’s Version) , adding six of the never-released tracks , newly recorded with favorite producers Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff . The songs are full of references and lyrical callbacks … [Read more...] about Baby Just Say Yes … to These Easter Eggs Off Taylor Swift’s
