Photo-Illustration: Sheldon Cooper/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Much of Clubhouse is boring — or, at least, disproportionately filled with the awkward in-between of group interaction. This is far from a novel observation, and it’s an observation that continues to be made even as the attention and discourse around the audio chat app rose to fever pitch over the past few weeks. Pulling data from Apptopia, the New York Times reported that the app had been downloaded over four million times in the past month alone, which broadly corresponds with my own immediate networks. I started out the year with few outside my professional circles knowing what the app was; now, it’s something that gets brought up in my various Whatsapp groups every few days. That I personally find much of the app boring is a subjective contention, of course. I’m certain a substantial portion of the app’s user base would passionately differ from my assessment, and perhaps rightly so. I’ve only … [Read more...] about Does Clubhouse Mean Bad Things for Podcasting?
Photo-Illustration: by Vulture; Photos by Spotify and Betty Labs Incorporated Given Spotify’s grand ambitions to become the all-consuming audio platform of the universe, it has become a consistent point of curiosity as to what the company will do with the increasing interest around Clubhouse and the social audio category — or “live group audio,” as I prefer to call it — more generally. Frankly, the question was never an if, but a when and a how. This morning, we have an answer: The Swedish audio streaming platform just announced that it has acquired a Los Angeles-based startup called Betty Labs , which is perhaps best known for creating Locker Room , the sports-centric social audio app. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but I imagine it’s fairly modest compared to the flashy sums paid out for the likes of The Ringer, Megaphone, and Anchor. It’s an intriguing move, though I say this in part because I’ve been closely watching that app as a big sports consumer … [Read more...] about Spotify Has Its Own Clubhouse Now
Jason Concepcion. Photo: Felisha Tolentino for Crooked Media To be a close follower of Jason Concepcion’s work — whether it’s the beloved pop culture deep-dive podcast Binge Mode , the Emmy award-winning NBA Desktop , his integral role on The Hottest Take , or simply the five-alarm takes published under his Twitter moniker, netw3rk — is to appreciate a kind of balance. There’s an electricity to his voluminous output, equal parts chaos, anarchy, and sheer energy. But his work is also grounded by a distinct thoughtfulness that shines through even as a take or a discussion goes off the rails, generally cut with a genuine sense of hope and appreciation. You get the sense that he just wants things to be better than they are. Last fall, Concepcion announced that, after almost a decade working under Bill Simmons (first at Grantland, then at the Ringer), he was leaving to join Crooked Media, the political podcast powerhouse. At his new home, he’ll be working on an … [Read more...] about Jason Concepcion’s Takes on the World
