If you’re mainly interested in seeing Elvis’s psychology, personal biography, and feelings explored in detail, this documentary won’t do much for you. Mythically powerful signposts and totems, such as the impact of Elvis’s twin brother dying at birth, get glossed over. Standard opinions are trotted out again, like the belief that Elvis’s movie output was mostly pointless, except for a couple of the early ones — a statement that people who obsess over how he moved, and how Hollywood struggled to reconcile its need for safety with Elvis’s sexual dangerousness, would dispute. Unsavory and depressing aspects of the King’s later years, such as his drug addiction and paranoia, his increasingly erratic and even violent behavior, and his symbiotic relationship with hangers-on, are barely addressed. Good news for the many Police Academy fans who grew up to be Key & Peele fans: The Hollywood Reporter reports that Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have signed on to produce New Line Cinema’s reboot of the beloved seven-movie comedy. There’s no word on whether they will act in the project, but the sketch comedy duo would likely fit in at the Academy. Either way, they will join original producer Paul Maslansky, who promised THR that the film is “going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV.” While New Line announced its intention to do a new Police Academy four years ago, it has been on hold for a while, with director Scott Zabielski no longer attached and original franchise star Steve Guttenberg’s willingness to participate still unclear. Megaproducer Ryan Murphy is calling on some familiar faces from his television empire for his upcoming Broadway production of The Boys in the Band. Playbill reports the all-star cast includes Broadway veterans Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, and Andrew Rannells, as well as Matt Bomer, who is making his debut on the Great White Way. The limited-run production marks the 50th anniversary of Mart Crowley’s ground-breaking comedic drama about a group of gay men at a small party. The play, which opened in a small venue Off-Broadway in 1968, made history with its depiction of the relationships and struggles of gay men in that era and became a sensation. This upcoming production, directed by Tony winner Joe Mantello, is the first time the show will appear on Broadway.
