Photo: Jon Pack/HBO Max All right, now that murder and kidnapping are out of the way, how about the quartet break the ice with a misdemeanor instead? Perhaps a light infraction? Or at least a petty offense ? HBO Max has renewed the painfully millennial Search Party for a fifth season, with stars Alia Shawkat , John Reynolds, John Early, and Meredith Hagner all returning to their roles as Brooklyn’s unluckiest denizens. In addition to Search Party ’s renewal, the streaming service handed a two-year overall deal with co-creators Charles Rogers and Sarah-Violet Bliss, with the duo developing new projects beyond the show. “Potential titles for upcoming shows include Monkeys Love Manhattan and The Pineapple Predicament ,” they joked in a statement. “Those aren’t actual shows we would ever pitch, but it exhibits that we can make up titles if we need to.” At the end of Search Party ’s current season, viewers were led to believe that Dory (Shawkat) had met her fiery … [Read more...] about Dory Will Keep Swimming With

Series Premiere Recap: Dory the Explorer
Search Party The Mysterious Disappearance of the Girl No One Knew; The Woman Who Knew Too Much Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2 Editor’s Rating 4 stars * * * * Previous Next » Alia Shawkat as Dory. Photo: Macall Polay/TBS It might be helpful to think of Search Party as a bizarro Girls . Yes, it’s populated with the same kind of privileged, self-absorbed young Brooklynites you’ll find in Lena Dunham’s HBO show. But unlike Hannah Horvath, Search Party ’s heroine, Dory (Alia Shawkat), actually seems to care about things beyond her own navel. As the series begins, Dory finds herself mesmerized by a missing person sign taped to a lamppost. (She also finds herself literally standing in shit, a nifty metaphor for the state of her life.) It turns out Dory went to college with the missing girl in question — the improbably named Chantal Witherbottom (Clare McNulty) — and although they barely knew each other, Dory is greatly affected by her … [Read more...] about Series Premiere Recap: Dory the Explorer
Recap: The Writing on the Wall
Search Party The Mystery of the Golden Charm; The Secret of the Sinister Ceremony Season 1 Episodes 5 and 6 Editor’s Rating 4 stars * * * * « Previous Next » Alia Shawkat as Dory. Photo: Macall Polay An interesting aspect of Search Party is that Dory’s friends are slightly freaked out by her sudden enthusiasm for, well, anything. Drew, in particular, seems confused that she’s demonstrating so much agency of her own. Looking for Chantal has given Dory a sense of self-worth. She isn’t the only to find a sense of purpose in Chantal’s disappearance. Dory’s bored, rich boss Gail (Christine Taylor) hates her life and secretly suspects her husband is cheating. The latest attempt to alleviate her misery is homemade seltzer — “for the environment,” she says, unconvincingly — as Dory scrolls through Chantal’s emails. Turns out, Chantal had a roommate she despised named Penelope. Both Gail and Dory agree that Penelope is a possible suspect. … [Read more...] about Recap: The Writing on the Wall
Who Should (and Will) Win at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards?
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and The Crown are both Globes front-runners, but under very different circumstances. Photo-Illustration: Vulture, Netflix and Amazon Studios Let’s be honest: Every year is kind of a weird year for the Golden Globes. Relative to other awards shows, the Globes are boozier, more random, more GIF-able , and proud of it. But this year is extra- extra weird. The ceremony, to be broadcast Sunday night on NBC , is being held in a pandemic, which means Tina Fey will be co-hosting from New York, Amy Poehler will be co-hosting from Los Angeles, and presenters will appear in person but nominees won’t. There will not be a red carpet, but E! and NBC will still host pre-shows featuring celebrity interviews. And on top of that weirdness, just a few days before the Golden Globes, an L.A. Times story called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for all kinds of shadiness, giving the event even more of a “Why does this even matter?” vibe than usual. … [Read more...] about Who Should (and Will) Win at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards?
