Deadline reports that Alan Alda is joining the cast of The Longest Ride, an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. Directed by George Tillman Jr., The Longest Ride follows the intertwining stories of two couples: an elderly man injured in a car crash (Alda) who experiences flashbacks to his departed wife, and a college student who falls in love with a wounded bullfighter. The Fault in Our Stars’ Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen are producing, with Fault screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber penning the script, in case you had any doubts that this is going to be a real weeper. There’s this cigarette trick he does that is a little silly in the book but really doesn’t work onscreen, possibly because you are too busy studying the odd geometry of Ansel Elgort’s mouth.
