Spectrum sale manages excess terrestrial demand, not fit for Satcom services: Space group

NEW DELHI: The auction of airwaves has been traditionally used to manage excess demand in the terrestrial mobile services , and auctioning shared spectrum would create hurdles while the government should be mindful of investments in the sector, a top executive of Satcom Industry Association ( SiA ) India Wednesday said. “Auctions have been used to manage excess demand in the terrestrial wireless, and through this means mobile network operators buy rights for the exclusivity of spectrum use,” senior regional advisor at Inmarsat and coordinator for Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA) Bashir Patel said, adding that auctioning the shared spectrum would create difficulties both in technical and legal terms. Patel was speaking virtually at the first foundation anniversary of Delhi-based SiA India . 17.25 GHz were identified in the World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC) – 2019 for 5G that excluded the 27.50-29.50 GHz, he further said. Citing the telecom industry group, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Patel said that the body itself asserted that the 400 MHz spectrum was needed for telecom operators, and 24.25 to 27.50 GHz would be appropriate for four telecom operators.
