Beloved Berkeley cafe Bartavelle is moving from its small takeout window on San Pablo Avenue into a larger space down the street, where it will grow into an all-day cafe and wine bar. Owner Suzanne Drexhage, who runs the cafe with her son Sam Sobolewski, hopes to open at 1621 San Pablo Ave. near Virginia Street, next summer. The new space, formerly Berkeley Stereo, will allow the owners to return to their original vision for Bartavelle, a cafe that turned into wine pop-up Bar Sardine , at night. "When we first started this thing we wanted to be a wine bar, way back when," Drexhage said. "We really want to get back to that." In its new home, Bartavelle will continue to serve its popular, seasonal breakfast and lunch fare during the day like whole grain porridge, fresh pastries and tomato toast in the summer . The evening wine bar will have a list of natural wines made locally and mostly by women producers.
