“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson will open the 42nd Denver Film Festival at a red carpet screening of his new murder mystery, “Knives Out,” on Halloween. That’s according to the Denver Film Society, the nonprofit organization that produces the festival. While Denver Film slowly revealed red carpet screenings, special presentations and other details on separate days last week, officials held the Johnson announcement until they had full approval from distributor Lionsgate.RELATED: “Knives Out,” “Marriage Story” will bookend Denver Film Fest’s 2019 red carpets Now we know Johnson will not only attend the red carpet screening of “Knives Out,” which takes place at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on Oct. 31, but that he’ll also be 2019’s John Cassavetes Award recipient — the Denver Film Festival’s highest honor. Past winners include Jason Reitman, Elliott Gould, Judy Greer, Harry Dean Stanton, J.K. Simmons and Tim Robbins. Johnson’s appearance in Denver includes a post-screening discussion at the Ellie.
