On Sunday evening, the lawns of Castle Park in Bristol’s city centre transformed into what could easily have been mistaken for a festival camp ground. But while the flags and bunting and colourful tents may give off an air of whimsy, the campers were there for a very serious reason. These are no ordinary campers, but activists belonging to climate change campaign Extinction Rebellion, and since Monday morning they have been protesting and campaigning across the city with marches, road blockades and cycling go-slows in an attempt to get their voices heard. Nobody knows exactly how many ‘rebels’ are in the camp, but at the most recent count there were thought to be around 100 tents. Bristolians’ reactions to the activity have been mixed, with some people supporting the cause and others offering criticism of the blocked roads. Here at Bristol Live, we decided to get to know the campaigners, to find out exactly what it takes to put together such a large-scale operation and why the climate change message is so important to them.
