Hull’s brilliant memories of ‘true legend’ Tony Werewolf

The people of Hull have been sharing their memories of a “true East Park legend” remembered by generations of kids. The man known simply to many as “Tony Werewolf” was a familiar face for children of the 80s and 90s who often made the Holderness Road park their playing-out destination of choice – and it is clear he has gone down in folklore. Tony was a hit with many and used to join in rugby and football games on the park, with generations remembering him for his hairy legs and trademark howl. Hull Live spoke to Tony’s family, who revealed his real name is Tony Mellors and that he suffered brain damage as a baby after contracting meningitis. But they said his “larger than life” character endeared him to many – with one of his eccentricities being his watch, which he claimed had a direct link to Happy Days star the Fonz – one of his favourite celebrities.
